The taximeter and the odometer are two instruments commonly found in vehicles, but they serve different purposes:

The taximeter is a device used primarily in taxis to calculate the fare of the journey based on the prices approved by the Public Administration. This calculation is based on a combination of distance traveled and time. Taximeters are essential for providing a fair and transparent fare for both the driver and the passenger. The fare may vary depending on the city or country, and can include base rates, rates per kilometer/mile, and waiting time fees.

As a device that converts the calculation into an amount to be paid, it is subject to compliance with regulations that govern it, such as the European MID Directive or the international OIML.

It is generally mounted on the dashboard of the taxi with our TX80 URBA or replacing the rearview mirror as in the case of our TX80 SKYGLASS II PRO model, always visible to both the driver and the passenger.

On the other hand, the odometer is a precision instrument that allows the measurement of road distance in meters, km, or miles. It is ideal for installation in highway maintenance vehicles and surveying, road signage, as well as measuring cables, pipelines, fences, construction, industrial zones, sports facilities, agricultural installations, rally cars, etc.

This device has different measurement functions such as multiple measurement, start, pause, and resume measurement, to adapt to the line that needs to be measured. The odometer is easily installed and calibrated on any type of vehicle.

In Germany, motor vehicles rented with a driver for professional purposes, known as VTCs, require a calibrated odometer if the service charge is calculated based on the distance traveled. This odometer requires a certificate of homologation, issued by the official body, the PTB (“Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt”), for the entire country. Odometers are usually calibrated every two years.

In Germany, from January 1, 2024, new taximeters and odometers must also comply with the cash register law (KassenSichV), recording all transactions made in order to justify business results in the face of possible tax inspections.

In summary, the taximeter is specifically designed to calculate fares in taxis, based on distance and time, while the odometer solely measures distance.
